6th Annual Be You Stay True *VIRTUAL* Basketball Camp
With COVID-19 turning the world upside down, the Be You Stay True Program was committed to providing an outlet for all to attend. We had coaches host their stations from different states such as New York, Connecticut, Arizona, and Illinois. Our 6th annual camp was hosted live on Zoom Sunday, July 19th at 12:00pm EST and had over 130 attendees from both the United States and Ireland. In all, it was a fantastic day and our small way of providing a positive light to the world the way we know best. Shirt fundraiser used to create College Scholarship
In prepping for BYST camp each year our program sells shirts to commemorate the on going success of BYST within the Bronx. From camp participants, to volunteers, parents, and supporters people have always supported the “Brand”, Be You Stay True! With the funds raised new equipment, trophies, and certificates are bought for the kids attending camp, but with the restrictions placed in New York state due to COVID our program shifted our focus.
Within our founder's role as an admission counselor in the Office of Admissions at the College of Mount Saint Vincent, Andrew Curiel was able to create a college scholarship. 100% of the funds raised from the t-shirt sales went to a BYST Scholarship fund that will be awarded to a young person of color in the name of George Floyd for the 2020 - 2021 academic year. In total, our fundraiser sold 156 shirts and raised $2,060. This scholarship will create an opportunity to alleviate some of the costs that come with attending the College of Mount Saint Vincent while keeping the name and memory of George Floyd alive.
At Be You Stay True we have continued to come to understand that our ability to impact should not be restricted to only the kids in our community through basketball — but through various avenues that our coaches and founders are involved in.
